Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC)

The Aga Khan Trust for Culture is the cultural agency of the Aga Khan Development Network. Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Geneva, AKTC operates the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme, the Aga Khan Music Programme, the AKTC Education Programme, and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.

AKTC has not, to date, undertaken a major project in southern Moroccan earthen heritage. Its principal Moroccan activities have focused on Fez and on broader Islamic-world architectural and cultural programming. The Aga Khan Visual Archive at MIT, while unrelated to direct AKTC programming, represents the model of digital cultural infrastructure with which AKTC has been historically associated.

The trust is a potential funder and institutional partner for southern Moroccan heritage projects framed within the wider context of Islamic-world architectural heritage. Its Music Programme provides a structural precedent for the kind of project — combining documentation, education, and revitalisation of disappearing traditions — that maps onto the disappearing maalem economy in southern Morocco.
