Matmata

Matmata is a Berber troglodyte settlement in the Matmata Mountains of southeastern Tunisia, around forty kilometres southwest of Gabès. The architectural signature of the region is the pit dwelling — a circular open courtyard, typically six to ten metres in diameter, sunk three to seven metres into the soft sandstone, with rooms tunnelled horizontally outward into the surrounding rock.

The pit-dwelling form is ancient — pre-Islamic in origin and continuously occupied through the Roman, medieval Islamic, and modern periods — and represents a distinct branch of the broader earthen-architecture family of the region. The form's environmental logic is the cooler temperature of subterranean rooms and the protection of the courtyard from prevailing winds; the courtyard catches and stores winter rainfall through a careful system of channels and cisterns.

A small minority of Matmata's pit dwellings remain inhabited by Berber families of the region; many have been adapted as guest accommodation and one — at the Hôtel Sidi Driss — is internationally recognised as a filming location for Star Wars (1977 and subsequent films). The dual function as a living vernacular and a film tourism site has produced a complex and uneven conservation landscape that is not currently coordinated under any unified institutional programme.
