Glaoua
The dominant tribal confederation of the High Atlas in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, based at Telouet. Madani El Glaoui and his brother Thami El Glaoui (later Pasha of Marrakesh under the French Protectorate, 1912–1956) extended the family's regional authority through patronage, kasbah construction, and political alliance with first the Moroccan sultanate and then the French. Many of the surviving kasbahs of southern Morocco were built or rebuilt under Glaoua patronage.
