Documentation for Emergency Stabilization and the Integrated Conservation Planning of Earthen Architecture Settlements: The Kasbah of Taourirt

The technical documentation paper from the early phase of the Getty / CERKAS / CIMS Carleton collaboration on Kasbah Taourirt. The paper sets out the heritage recording methodology applied at the site: photogrammetry, total station survey, EDM, and computer-aided drawing combined into an integrated documentation workflow producing site atlases for use by the conservation team.

The paper is significant for the field because it represents one of the earliest integrated applications of digital heritage documentation methods to a southern Moroccan earthen site at the scale of an entire 1.6-hectare complex. The methodology was subsequently transferred to the local CERKAS team through a sixteen-day training programme — an explicit attempt to embed the documentation capability within the Moroccan institutional structure rather than leaving it dependent on the visiting Canadian team.
