Amghar

The Tamazight term for a chief or elder — literally "the elder" or "the great one." In the customary governance of the southern Moroccan and Anti-Atlas tribal confederations the amghar is the appointed or hereditary head of a lineage, douar, or jma'a; the role overlaps with but is not identical to the Arabic shaykh and is distinct from the colonial-era administrative caid. The amghar n ufella (the upper amghar, or war leader) and the amghar n waman (the water amghar) are two specialised offices of the same root in the Anti-Atlas customary system.
