Palmeraie

The palm-grove agricultural system that surrounds and supports most southern Moroccan oasis settlements. The palmeraie is the economic foundation of the kasbah and ksar landscapes — the date harvest, the irrigation system (khettara and seguia), and the layered cultivation of dates, wheat, vegetables, and fodder beneath the palms together produce the agricultural surplus that historically supported settled life in the pre-Saharan valleys.
