Riad

A traditional Moroccan urban house organised around a central courtyard with an interior garden, typically containing fruit trees and a fountain, drawing on the Persian and Andalusian chahar bagh tradition. Riads are characteristic of the northern Moroccan medinas — Marrakech, Fez, Meknes — and sit outside the principal scope of this archive, which focuses on the rural pre-Saharan vernacular. The term is included here because of frequent cross-reference in the broader literature.
